Laparoscopy, a type of minimally invasive surgery, is used to remove ovarian cysts, or masses, in cases of laparoscopic cystectomy. A laparoscope is a small, illuminated telescope-like equipment that a surgeon puts into the abdomen through a tiny incision to do surgery or perform an examination. Cysts and growths on the ovaries that are persistent, growing, or producing symptoms are removed by laparoscopic cystectomy. The purpose of a laparoscopic cystectomy is to remove the cyst or growth and save the remaining ovarian tissue in order to maintain the patient's fertility. It is only advised to have a laparoscopic cystectomy if the cyst or mass is most likely benign (noncancerous). A minimally invasive technique called laparoscopic cystectomy is used to locate and remove tumors or cysts from one or both ovaries. A doctor could suggest a laparoscopic cystectomy if a patient has symptoms related to a cyst or if the cyst requires closer examination.
